I don't understand you completly. But if you mean the neccessary communication 
to a modem before the connection is established (say: set speaker volume, set 
waiting for a dialtone, dial a number) this is normaly done with a "chat" 
program (i.e. a program which sends a string and waits a short time for some 
specific answer to come in from the modem. In the Linux (if it were a client) 
you would look out for "chat" (man chat).

This and CHAP and MSCHAP are really inside the PPP protocol specifications and 
are handled by the pppd on the server side (and your client ppp 
implementation in the EtherNut). You can set up what you want on the server 
(any number of account names/passwords).
