Grahame,
For windows, I'd be sure that you are using hyperterm.
This program is so incredibly buggy.
As you are using Linux, I'd suggest to check the
tty settings: 8-bit, no parity, 1 stopbit is
required.
Characters above 127 doesn't display correctly, so
it looks like 7 bit to me.
