Ted,
>There's an excellant discussion of this in the Introduction section of
>chapter 23 ("TCP Keepalive Timer") in Stevens "TCP Illustrated Vol 1."
This book is the first choice for TCP development.
Volume 2 2. ;-)
>Is it possible to tell the difference between the cable being
>disconnected and the hub/switch/router losing power temporarily?
Definitely not.
To all:
The problem may sound exotic to some of us, but becomes
important with PPP and even more important with GPRS.
If the line is cut, you don't expect your browser to
report an error, but expect the GPRS layer to silently
re-establish the link, right?
On the other hand, in reliable embedded systems a link cut
is an important event.
