Hi Sigurd,

Thanks for the input, but I'd already sorted the problem.

I'm slightly embarrassed to admit that I just cut-and-pasted the sample 
code without first attempting to understand what it did.  I was setting the 
timer to run with a period of just over 1 us.  I was then putting  rather 
more than 1 us -worth of instructions into the interrupt handler.  Result - 
nothing else could get a look in!

Ho hum.
