Thanks to all who have replied.

Part of the reason I wanted to change the makefile is that so it can be used 
directly in AVRStudio. The build system in Studio is looking for a makefile 
which it can run with that will generate an .elf file.

Sifting thru the make manual but I am unsure of where in the numerous layers of 
make rules that the rm .elf occurs.
