I agree. And there may be other items as well. Unfortunately the
preprocessor will not produce assembler compatible results from
all header files. If this will be properly maintained, we would
be able to use the header file configurations for conditional
assembly of the startup code.

Note, that .S (capital letter) invokes the C preprocessor before
calling the assembler.
