I've had a ENC28J60 running for months on a web-server with a mega128 
clocked at 7.2728 MHz, and have had no problems at all with it.
I've two other boards with ENC28J60's on and haven't notices any 
problems with those either. None of these are even close to 8 MHz SPI 
frequency !
Also note that the 2k bias resistor that was recommended on the early 
devices should now be 2.7k. This lowers current consumption 
considerably, I'm not sure how much though, haven't measured.
