Too long ago... I remember that this solved a temporary problem.
But I'm almost sure, that it is not required any longer.

Definitely yes, specially under high traffic. The chip will
lose packets and sometimes become corrupted. Anyway, under
all circumstances the driver seems to work very reliable.
