Hi Mike,

I had the same problem before.  It ended up to be some badly designed
RS232-USB adapters.

There are some USB-RS232 Adapter not working well under Linux and Windows.
I've tried so many USB-RS232 Adapters here myself and found only some USB
1.0 - RS232 adapters working correctly.  For most USB 2.0 - RS232 adapters I
tried, most of them are working correctly.

I tested USB 2.0 - RS232 adapters with avrdude in Linux and Windows and AVR
Studio in Windows, and they are working great!

So, I guess you have to get another adapter for this to work.
