The history: at91_efc had been part of the initial SAM7X port, 
contributed by "Daidai". The purpose was to provide some kind of 
non-volatile storage without external EEPROM or DataFlash.

A recent ChangeLog entry (2008-07-28):

* conf/arch/arm.nut: Re-enabled NUT_CONFIG_AT91EFC for the
SAM7SE again. No idea why this had been removed.

Actually it is used in dev/nvmem.c.
