Where are you petting the WatchDog at?  Is it enabled at the point where you
try to register the Ethernet device?

My guess is that the Ethernet reregistration is waiting on some event before
returning.

I haven't looked at any of that code in a long time, and I've never looked
at the code for your Ethernet chip,
so I don't remember what all happens during Ethernet device registration.
