Yes, this would be the best. But when going through more than 1.500
commits it is really hard to decide by importance and to extract the
essentials from the logs.

It was totally fine! So what about making a cut in the NEWS file, keep
the history and add a little explanation with a sample on top. And from
now on only add important (to the enduser) changes while trying to
increase svn log quality as well by giving more explanatory descriptions
there too?
