sorry for not replying sooner, but I've lots of stuff to do, and so 
little time for it ;)

Harald, I checked your modified version of compiler.h. Those Register 
definitions are really missing in the libc 20020630 . unfortunately, 
dev/uartavr.c seems not to include compiler.h by default. But even when 
fixing this, it still did not run.
So I will now first crank up my toolchain to the cutting-edge with Ted 
Roth's snapshots and try the 2.59 ethernut release with it.

so, since I've got a long weekend and lousy weather, chances are I  can 
report something usefull quite soon ;)
