I have started writing SPI routines for the Atmel DataFlash Chips instead...

I've used this to program ATmega128 chips on an add-on
board some time ago. The add-on board communicated with
the Ethernut via SPI and Ethernut was able to upload
new software via ISP.
Because the following version of this board uses JTAG and
communicates via TWI, I haven't used those routines for
some months.
Though, they become attractive again in combination with
the STK500 compatible ISP adapter we are shipping with
the Ethernut. It should be possible to update the adapter's
firmware.
