While removing the original emails from the reply,
some additional explanations are required.

Like myself, Richard made the experience, that the RTL8019AS
signals CHRDY quite often under heavy traffic and becomes
completely corrupted when ignoring this line.

Richard's main idea was, to extend the ATmega write cycles
by a smart interrupt handling of the Realtek's CHRDY line.
Further information could be found in the RTL's data sheet.

This requires, that the ATmega accesses the Realtek by
port bits, not by direct memory access.
