For the MAC address there also is chips for Maxim/Dallas that have the
unique registered address(DS2502). This can be useful for low volume
designs. The chip costs $1.7 or something like that and you can be
thrown away or be used for something else after getting the id.

The Mac-Address consists of two parts, a vendor ID and
a free definable part. The vendor ID can be obtaind by
the IEEE.

There is a bootloader which can update the software in
a LAN. AFAIK it currently not support update via
internet. But you can use the bootloader as a base to
make your own,internet enabled, bootloader.

Look at http://www.ethernut.de/en/projects.html there
you can find the ostime-104.zip which contains a SNTP
implementation.

You can download the Hardware Manual for the Ethernut
2, this contains the complete schematic.
