I have now tried everything you suggested.

Unfortunately it has no effect, but thanks anyway. It seems like my
changes in hd44780.c doesn´t have any effect at all. I have even changed
the display and run the original code without any changes, but I still
have only 1 line and still only 16 characters in the display.

But I won´t play with it until the new year. So have a nice Christmas
and a happy new year.
