I like the look of the OKI chips
http://www.okisemi.com/jp/english/ml674k.htm

I was quoted $8.86US on the ML67Q4002TC in lots of 60 and $10.45 US on
the ML67Q4003TC

http://www.okisemi.com/jp/english/arm-strt.htm. There is also a step up
from there to a faster chip in the same package. They read very much
like a big AVR, (but cost less than one).

The look like quite a natural progression and fit on an AVR board.
