I guess that the hardware is not the problem. Is there
any software that would support such a simple adapter
and AVRs?

Some time ago I discussed this with Marc Wetzel. After
"destroying" two ATmegas using wrong JTAG sequences,
I gave up.

Btw. http://www.embedded-creations.com/ developed
a simple JTAG programmer (no debugging yet) based
on the ATmega8L. It uses the serial port and the
AVRprog protocol.
