If a possibility to dump debug information is all you need, you may consider
using the i2c port in master mode for this purpose.

Using a PC interface in slave mode like
http://www.telos.de/tracii/default_e.htm
you can build a logging facility without the need for extra pins or a
software uart.
This even works if you already have i2c devices connected since you can just
assign a different slave address to the PC.
