What shall I change in the httpd code?
Currently I have placed a minimalistic index.html, but it is a TEMPORARY

Yes, it is. You can change the httpd code to display a dynamicly
generated content.
If you don't want to change anything, you could place at least a
minimalistic index.html in the filesystem, that redirects to a cgi or
includes a cgi with the ssi mechanism.
