Forgiveme in advance for stepping into this...

IIRC the most sensible solution seemed to be: Modify on a "only where 
needed" basis. Any generic solution is too complex ans slower, OTOH (On 
The Other Hand) there are very few specific points where something needs 
to be done.

This would bring 2 benefits: simpler implementation and testind and 
better overall performance>
