I think we should definately stay on the SVN right now and do not open
any new version system or fork. We should better try to work together
instead of opening an "own version".

I fully agree that GIT is a way better versioning system for distributed
development than SVN, but I fear we will end up in a chaos if we have
two parallel trees.

So perhaps we could decide to switch to git at any later day, but not
now...

Just my 2 cents...
