No need for AVR-500/501. The adapter shown at

http://www.ethernut.de/en/jtag/jtagconn.html

is included in the ATJTAGICE, which is required (300 US$).

PDP-11? Wow, that's much more versatile than an ATmega128.
I rememer the 256 Byte (!) boot loader, which can boot from
paper tape, magnetic tape and harddisks. 128 Bytes of it
were used to check the CPU. Great stuff!
