I think you *should*
connect your grounds together. It is the easiest solution to
your problem.

in this case i would bridge the diode, i can't imagine, that this is so
good for the nut
i need to measure the speed indicator of an cpu fan (outside, on desk
only :-) )
is it possible to use the 12V supply for the ethernut and the fan
simultaneosly, maybe by using the pins of the unused jumper 3 (JP3) and
then conntect the speed indicator signal to int0
therefor no "groundconnection" is needed, isn't it, could this work
i don't want to destroy my ethernut
